UK renewable energy developer NatPower UK has partnered with Sembcorp Utilities UK to invest £1 billion in developing a massive 1GW/8GWh lithium-ion battery storage project. The project, named Teesside Gigapark, will be constructed on a 32-acre site at Sembcorp’s Wilton International facility.
Initially configured for 4 hours of storage duration, the system is designed with the potential to double its capacity to 8GWh, making it one of the longest duration storage projects in the UK . NatPower UK has secured a 1GW connection agreement with the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and plans to connect the project to the national grid via a 400kV transmission line by 2028.
The project represents a significant step in addressing grid stability challenges and integrating renewable energy sources into the UK’s power network. Mike Patrick, CEO of Sembcorp Energy UK, described it as “one of the UK’s most advanced battery storage projects” .
